Mixed Media Paint & Pattern Workshop for Parents & Children

A fast-moving, exciting class designed for individuals, parent-child or grandparent-child pairs, taught by mother-daughter team! Kids ages 10 - young adult are welcome. Each participant creates a 12" by 12" patchwork paper quilt made from textures and patterns we create during the class. Students carve a small rubber stamp to use for pattern making. Explore a variety of processes using paint, gesso, joint compound, ink, colored pencils, wax and glue. This class is all about "play" and having FUN, plus each person leaves with a treasure.

In the tradition of Post-Impressionist color and flattened form, Matisse would pave the way for contemporary abstraction, sensitivity to positive and negative space and innovative painting and collage techniques. This class explores both his still life/interior painting style and collage/cutouts process in the context of abstraction and color exaggeration, reminiscent of the Fauve ideal. Appropriate for all levels of studio experience. Includes a kick-off introductory lecture session on Thursday evening before weekend workshop.

Learn about the history of pine needle basketry, the longleaf pine tree, and make a pine needle basket utilizing the traditional method of coiling. All supplies are provided. Students will be using a sewing needle, and need to be able to distinguish individual stitches.

Spend a morning with artist Sharon Wozniak-Spencer on museum grounds and in galleries, gain understanding on how to draw what you see, with accurate sight measuring, plane changes, positive and negative space. Using classical measuring, students better understand how to accurately draw what they see and improve their drawing skills.

Students learn basic methods of constructing sculptures using a wide range of wire gauges. Joining techniques will be an important focus. Students work in both abstract and representational styles and are encouraged to arrive with projects in mind.

Create a series of mixed-media sculptures using ceramics and fibers. Students use clay hand-building techniques to create pinch pots and sculptural beads then combine the fired ceramic objects with fabric and paper to weave patterns and textures into the bowls. Participants are invited to incorporate various types of materials as they wish, including paint, wire and found objects.

This one day workshop explores the use of colored pencils as a fine art medium. By the end of the workshop, students have completed a simple photorealistic painting. All materials will be furnished by the instructor for use during the workshop for the supply fee listed.

Prepare your own handmade book filled with handmade paper and layered fall foliage, pods, seeds and items to create natural botanical prints engaging with the contact print process. Learn about plants, vats, dye recipes, papers, fabrics for bundling and steaming, iron blankets, iron water, along with natural dye processes with falls bounty of black walnut, chestnut, fresh indigo leaves, acorns, pantry items and more. Learn technical terms and experience hands on techniques that will have you ready to enjoy the experience again on your own after the workshop. This workshop is not like any we have shared in the Museum School before. If you have enjoyed our indigo workshops, you will love this day!

Registration Guidelines

Classes and workshops are small, and space is limited. Students are encouraged to register at the earliest opportunity in the event a popular course fills quickly. Waiting until the last moment to register may also result in disappointment if a course is cancelled due to low enrollment. There is a 10% increase in tuition roughly one week before start date. Specific amounts and dates are indicated with each session.


Students may register online, by phone or in person. Registration opens for each session on different dates. Check Session Headings for details. CAM members enjoy discounted tuition.

Registration is complete and confirmed when payment is received and processed.

Refunds will not be issued for withdrawals from a class or workshop within 72 hours before start time. However, tuition (less 10%) will be transferred to student's choice of a future class or workshop. Students who withdraw within 24 hours of start time will receive credit for tuition less 50%.

No refunds or transfers will be given once the class has started.

Students who are not in attendance and have not been in touch with the Museum School office will be charged the full price of the class or workshop.

If class or workshop does not make minimum enrollment, it will be cancelled and enrolled students will receive their choice of 100% refund or transfer of tuition.
