IN PERSON - Walkabout: Downtown

This photography workshop is geared to the photographer of all skill levels. There are many interesting and accessible places to photograph here in the Wilmington region. One of the best is our downtown itself. Participants meet at the corner of Front and Nunn to begin our Walkabout. The homes and gardens of old Wilmington make wonderful subjects for the photographer. With stunning views of the Cape Fear from the River Walk and the city center offering opportunities for classic street photography, this workshop will be a winner for every photographer. Any digital device may be used for this workshop, smart phones, tablets or DSLRs. DSLR street photography is fun using a wide lens, but a telephoto zoom would also be nice to bring everything in close. Alan will be available with assistance and technical advice. Meetup is 10 AM at Front and Nun Streets. Please have a mask, remember social distancing and dress for the weather. On Saturday, we will meet at the corner of Market and Front streets downtown. Make a mug/tumbler with minimal skills required. You will pinch, smooth, and texturize a mug that fits perfectly to your hand. Art Buzz is a fun art class that combines art-making and eating and drinking. Each class comes with a complimentary beverage.

Special guests from Turning the Wheel will help you discover the pleasure of movement games as they inspire your creativity, make you smarter and build resilience. Fun for all ages and abilities! Join us for improvisational movement games, mask making, and live music. Registration includes free admission to explore CAM’s current exhibitions, and family guide booklets are provided. Spend the morning enjoying art in many forms!

Turning the Wheel Productions, Inc is a national non-profit working with youth around the country, bringing our unique model of play, movement, and community building. Participants are given a chance to be seen, to lead, and take risks in a safe and supportive environment. Research has established that spontaneous activity develops the brain’s ability to respond in non-patterned ways and discover new possibilities increasing resilience. We encourage the entire family to participate and take the activities home to share with your extended family.

Art Explorers: Nature Walk & Collage

Join Miss Bobbi for a day filled with nature and creativity. We will read "Summer Song" by Kevin Henkes "They Say Blue" by Jillian Tamaki, then head out onto CAM’s grounds for a nature-collecting walk. We will take what we collected and turn them into unique nature collages, then head into the galleries to see how many natural items we found on our walk can also be found in the paintings! Art Explorers is geared towards infants, toddler and preschoolers, but big brothers and sisters are welcome to join and create art with us.

Speak Ya Peace NC: Spoken Word and Music

Join us for spoken word and live music in CAM’s reception hall with Speak Ya Peace NC. The mission of Speak Ya Peace NC is to reach hearts and minds and create effective dialogue within the community through artful interpretation. July marks our nation’s independence with the 4th of July, yet the fight for civil rights continues. Join with poets and musicians to dialogue about injustices that are still are prevalent and operating through systematic racism. Art is at the heart of our healing and connection. We must be truthful for healing to occur. Speak Ya Peace NC, and Speak Out.

IN PERSON - 'Trashion' Make-It, Take-It Workshop

Students will create wearable fashion-based projects with a focus on recycling and upcycling, taking existing garments/accessories and revamping them into new pieces based on deconstruction and reconstruction. We will also discuss sustainability issues in the fashion industry and the importance of reimagining what we wear and the creative potential that already exists in our closets. Bonus - you don't have to use a sewing machine! Bring your hot glue gun and a bag of old clothes/accessories and let's reimagine these pieces as TRASHION... and keep'em out of the landfill!

Gallery Talk: Pam Toll

Pam Toll, an Associate Professor at UNC Wilmington, received a BA in Art and English Literature from UNC Chapel Hill and has been painting since childhood. Her studio is located at Acme Art Studios (Wilmington) which she co-founded in 1991, as a work and exhibition space for artists. She also co-founded No Boundaries International Art Colony (Bald Head Island, NC) in 1998, a residency program that in the last twenty years brought over 200 artists from around the world with the goal of creating a cross-exchange of cultures and artistic practices to share with our local community. Toll's work is represented in various collections including Casoria Contemporary Art Museum in Naples, Italy, Yildiz Technical University in Istanbul,Turkey, Art Pointe Gumno and St. Joakim Osgovoski in Macedonia, Simposio Internacional de Artistas en Noja, Spain, Cameron Art Museum, and Bald Head Island Corporation in NC.

Robert Johnson's exhibition is rich with imagery of our favorite plants, animals, insects and birds! Capture a memory from one of his notecards or paintings using clay. Form a flat clay plaque as your foundation and then build a relief using images from Robert Johnson's paintings to inspire you! Textures can be created to give your piece interest. Incising tools can also be utilized to create flowing lines that emphasize different areas. High school to Adult.
