Whether melting hearts at a whisper volume or being gracefully dynamic when the music calls for more intensity, his natural ability to strike listeners at their core is unmatched. His 2016 debut album, LoveStrong Vol. 1, a 10-song mix of original music and jazz classics, garnered national and international attention for its “blues-inflicted, Southern church-happy” sound.

A native of Washington, D.C., Strong is a graduate of the renowned Duke Ellington School for the Performing Arts and holds a Bachelor’s degree in Jazz Studies from North Carolina Central University and a Master’s in Jazz Performance / Pedagogy from Northern Illinois University.

Strong’s discipline and dedication to his craft has forged a prominent career that includes performances with music legends such as Aretha Franklin, The Count Basie Orchestra, Dwele, Eric Roberson, and The Hamiltones. He’s also served as music director for hip-hop pioneer Rakim and has headlined shows at the Blue Note Jazz Festival, Winter Jazz Fest, and Blues Alley.

Known for his creative ability to seamlessly re-imagine existing works like Thelonious Monk’s Blue Monk and the classic My Favorite Things, Strong aims to challenge the boundaries of music while connecting with his audiences.

For the past twenty years, Benny has performed in a diverse set of musical groups and engagements, ranging from orchestra pits to cruise ships to featured artist and soloist at numerous venues across the country and abroad. Benny has a Bachelor’s of Music from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and a Masters of Music from Northern Illinois University. Minnie Evans Birthday Celebration

Public Program

Minnie Evans Birthday Celebration

Sunday, December 11, 2022, 10 AM-5 PM

1 PM "Miss Minnie" Performed by Joyce Grear

Joyce Grear is a native of Wilmington who uses storytelling to teach and to build community. She has toured the U.S. since 1987 bringing to life many African American heroines whose stories she feels inspired to share. Her research into Evans dates to the dedication of the Bottle House that honors Minnie Evans’ time at Airlie Gardens. Joyce is the “griot” of Wilmington, teaching all ages through workshops, plays, and non-profit programs throughout North Carolina.

2 PM Work-in-Progress Preview Screening of "Minnie Evans: Visionary Artist" by Linda Royal

Minnie Evans: Visionary Artist is a documentary in production by local Director Linda Royal and an award-winning team of Producers. The feature documentary will explore the paradisiacal world of ancestral faces and mythical beings that came to her in mystical visions and dreams. Mining archived conversations and years of correspondence between Evans and photographer Nina Howell Starr, Minnie's voice sheds light on her life and her artistic process. The project includes interviews with surviving members of Evans's family, collectors of her art, local historian Bertha Todd, Anne Brennan, Executive Director of C.A.M. and features the beautiful coastal landscapes and nature that inspired her. Although she was self-taught, the film will show that Evans belongs among more famous artists and her paintings and drawings are a spiritual antidote to our contemporary divisive times. The project is currently raising funds to complete production for an early 2024 release and tax-deductible contributions can be made to the project through its fiscal sponsor the Southern Documentary Fund.
